Floating the Gunnison River - Roaring Fork Anglers

The Gunnison Gorge Wilderness is located nine miles northeast of Montrose and offers a wild and pristine backcountry
experience. A unique double canyon system of black granite layered with red sandstones, the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness is located within the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area just downstream from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The Gunnison Gorge Wilderness is only the second BLM managed wilderness area in Colorado; it is managed to preserve and protect its wilderness, scenic and recreational values.

The Gunnison Gorge Wilderness is managed to preserve and protect its outstanding wilderness, scenic and non motorized recreational values. The Wilderness offers a technical (Class III-IV) and remote boating experience for Fishermen, rafters, and kayakers. The boating changes with every flow and is very dependent on winter snow pack. We recommend checking current conditions before your trip.

Day-use and camping recreational user fees are charged in the Wilderness. A major use of fees is the control of tamarisk and other invasive species throughout the Wilderness Area.
