With spring run-off just around the corner, we start thinking about the many alternative options for fly-fishing in Western Colorado. Within 100 miles of Glenwood Springs, anglers might go after bass, crappie or pike at one of the state reservoirs, catch trout on damsel nymphs at area lakes and ponds or cast blue-winged olives to rising fish on the Frying Pan tailwater.
One of our favorite places to fish while we wait for the Roaring Fork and Colorado rivers to recede, is the Gunnison Gorge. The Gunnison River is dam controlled, making it fishable throughout spring run-off. The river also sees a prolific hatch of salmonflies during the first few weeks of June. This hatch of #4 sized insects is a sight to see in such a beautiful setting like the 'Gunnie' Gorge.
With the help of a long time outfitter of the Gunnison Gorge, we are now booking three-day/two-night fly-fishing trips on the 'Gunnie'.
